What is Manganese Phosphating?

Manganese Phosphating is a conversion coating most often applied to Steel and Iron components which provides strong adhesion and corrosion protection. Phosphating is most often used as a base layer before Paint and Powder coating and usually ranges in colour between a dark Grey and Black.

What is the Process?

Manganese Phosphate Coatings are suitable for components made or Iron or Steel. The component is immersed in a dilute solution of Phosphoric Acid and a chemical conversion takes place forming a protective layer of insoluble Manganese Phosphate crystals. In order to obtain the best possible results, parts will first be subject to a number of pre-treatments depending on their material which are all carried out in house.

What are the Advantages?

Phosphating is most often used as a pre-treatment process in the metal finishing of both Ferrous and Non-Ferrous components. Most often used in conjunction with paint and powder, Manganese Phosphating provides a smooth and corrosive resistant barrier for paint to be applied onto.

Manganese Phosphate is often used in conjunction with rust-inhibiting oils or waxes in order to provide corrosion protection for parts. The crystalline nature of the coating retains oil and so offers increased lubricity of parts as well as preventing metal on metal contact. The oil absorptive nature of Phosphating permits rapid break-in of moving parts and even after break-in, a fine distribution of oil ‘reservoirs’ remains ensuring continued lubrication.

Manganese Phosphating will prevent galling without the coating flaking or peeling off, it is popular within the automotive and power transmission industries for components such as: Bearings, Fasteners, Steering Parts and Axle Pins.
