Silver Plating in the Aerospace Industry
Silver Plating in the Aerospace Industry
Silver is popular in the Aero-space industry thanks to its ability to reduce the effects of galling (seizure) in high temperatures.
Our aerospace clients will often use Silver plating for their engine fasteners as it will provide a degree of lubrication up to 650°C.Silver electro-plating is also often used to give steel bearings enhanced fatigue resistance, thermal conductivity and corrosion resistance.
Historically Silver was used during World War 2 to resolve the high engine failure rate of the Boeing B-29 Super fortress. The silver coating reduces the friction between the steel ball and the steel cage which increases the performance of the engine. Today silver plating plays an important role inside of jet engines worldwide.
