Can Steel Be Anodised?

sulphuric anodisingHard Anodisingsilchrome plating anodising

Anodising is a conversion coating which coats a metal material with a protective oxide layer. Unlike in electro-plating where a metallic layer is deposited, Anodising develops both inwards and outwards from the original material surface.

When Aluminium components (and aluminium alloys) are anodised, they benefit through corrosion resistance, wear resistance and electrical insulation. Anodising also provides a good base for paint and can be used as a decorative finish.

This same process when applied to Iron or Carbon Steel would not be beneficial as it would create rust. This of course has the opposite effect, promoting corrosion in the underlying metal. If you wish to protect Steel components then we would recommend Zinc Plating. Zinc plating on steel offers excellent corrosion resistance properties at a cost effective price.

If you are unsure which process will give you the desired outcomes, then please get in touch with Silchrome Plating. We are on hand to help with enquiries and can recommend the finishing process that is best for your application. Silchrome are based in Leeds and offer a comprehensive array of finishing processes.
